METROPOLIS PLANET POSITIVE AWARDS
2026 Winner - Unbuilt

From our first visit to the future site of the Henrico County Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability, we knew it would be something special.

Designed to honor its extraordinary natural setting and advance an ambitious vision for environmental learning, the project reflects the power of collaboration across Perkins&Will. Principal and Chief Sustainability Officer Jason F. McLennan is lead designer, building on his legacy as creator of the Living Building Challenge—an aspiration the Center is working to achieve.

Our Bainbridge Island and North Carolina teams led the effort, with contributions from colleagues in Atlanta on landscape design. Together, the team is partnering with Henrico County Public Schools to create a place that connects students, educators, and the community to the land and to a more sustainable future.

With construction now underway, we look forward to the day the community gathers for a ribbon-cutting overlooking this remarkable property.

Urban Heat - by Tyrone Marshall
Urban Design isn’t just about getting people from Point A to Point B, it’s about getting them there comfortably.
For the City of Austin’s Our Future 35 Connecting Austin Mobility Study, Perkins&Will built a microclimate framework to answer a question: what will it feel like to stand on a freeway cap in Austin on a summer afternoon, and how can design improve that?

George Gibbs, Senior Project Architect
Architect and project leader with 20+ years of experience guiding housing, workplace, and mixed-use projects from concept through construction. Believes architecture is strongest when a clear design idea is sustained from early vision through precise execution. Leads multidisciplinary teams with full responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, and coordination, supporting both design ambition and disciplined delivery. Based on Bainbridge Island, brings deep experience navigating local permitting, regulatory frameworks, and construction realities to deliver coherent, buildable outcomes.

Meredith Hite, Designer I
Originally from Houston, Texas, Meredith earned a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture, a Master of Architecture, and an Urban Design Certificate from the University of Kansas. During her time at KU, she interned with Finkle + Williams Architecture and Perkins&Will’s Kansas City studio. She brings a strong foundation in design and a thoughtful interest in interior architecture, urban design, and the built environment.

Annie Ball, Project Designer
10 years working in the AEC industry with a focus in net-zero/sustainable design, material science, and construction. While working full time she obtained a Master of Science in Materials Engineering from the University of Illinois in 2024, with an emphasis to integrate material science research into sustainable and resilient methods within the built environment.

Sustainable Urban Design & Planning
Link in Bio
This issue is dedicated to Regenerative Pioneer Pliny Fisk III – who embodied the spirit of our publication in every way. We will miss you dearly!! In addition to our tribute to Pliny, we focus on topics related to urban design. It includes a story on the cities that most influenced my thinking around urban design, and interviews with key leaders within PW and our studio. Additionally, Tyrone Marshall showcases a study he did for the Austin Cap-and-Stitch project, and we introduce our new landscape architect and principal Josiah Cain. I hope everyone enjoys the issue, and that we all – in Pliny’s words – “create some serious commotion”.

The 3/4 Baked Recipe For Success
Introduction From Jason F. McLennan’s New Book

Break free from perfectionism and finish your creative projects. This unconventional guide shows you how to overcome creative blocks and finally complete your work through strategic imperfection. The world is full of creative people. So why do some get their ideas out in the world while others don’t? Why are some incredibly prolific while others struggle with deadlines or can’t complete projects? In this book, Jason F. McLennan—a master in “getting stuff done”—shares secrets to boosting productivity, innovation, and personal success. By adopting his “¾ baked” philosophy and the key lessons that surround it, readers will be able to dramatically increase their output while also keeping their creative juices flowing. McLennan’s recipe for creative success includes the following ideas:

• Look forward to failure
• Discover the power of feedback

We’ve all heard the phrase “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” Perfection is often what holds so many people back. Trying to reach it means that nothing much can get completed, and inspiration itself is often blocked as people either procrastinate or endlessly self-edit. By chasing perfection, it remains elusively further away.

The world is full of half-baked ideas—but almost no perfect ones. With The Magic of Imperfection, readers will learn how to seriously amp up what they do, how fast they do it, and simultaneously how well it gets done.

Architizer A+Awards
Special Mention 2026

McCall Field Campus Dining & Event Hall
University of Idaho

We’re honored to share that the McCall Field Campus Dining & Event Hall for the University of Idaho’s Department of Natural Resources has received an Architizer A+Awards Special Mention in the Unbuilt Sustainability category—placing the project among the top 5% worldwide.

Set at the edge of lake and forest in McCall, Idaho, the project is designed to become Idaho’s first Living Building Challenge project.

At its core, it’s a long-term investment in performance and place: a year-round dining and event space designed for efficiency, durability, and resilience in a demanding alpine climate.

The design prioritizes long-term operational value—reducing resource demand while increasing comfort, flexibility, and reliability across all seasons.

Warm, occupied interiors in winter. Open connection to landscape in summer. A civic space built for gathering, celebration, and continuity over time.

Construction is slated to begin in 2026.

Grateful to our collaborators, clients, and community partners.

MY LIFE IN GASTRONOMY
Ten dishes that reshaped my understanding of food and culture
by Jason F. McLennan

READ ONLINE: Link in bio

After architecture and music, it is food that excites me most from a cultural perspective. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to travel the globe to many far-flung places, and I’ve come to appreciate the powerful cuisines that emerge from place, climate, and culture and how they shape people and their experiences. When I travel, I relish the chance to sample local dishes and expand my palette to new tastes and my mind to new possibilities. Taste is, in turn, complemented and enhanced by smells, tactile experiences, and visual delights.
