Our Studio

Established in 2013, McLennan Design has quickly become known as a world leader in regenerative design, building a team of high-performance building experts that have delivered some of the most innovative green projects on the planet.

Housed within a net zero historic adaptive reuse facility located on beautiful Bainbridge Island, we are  a collective of architects, ecologists and engineers dedicated to creating a better world. Our tight-knit team is unified by our dedication to regenerative design, crafting sustainable spaces that seek to harmonize with the natural world.

In 2022, McLennan Design merged with Perkins&Will, blending our expertise and personalized approach with the global resources of the second-largest architecture firm in the world. This seamless collaboration uniquely positions us to deliver world-class regenerative design projects of any size and location in the world, combining the intimacy of a boutique studio with the capabilities of a global practice leader.

Our office space is an inspiring example of adaptive reuse, showcasing a Net-Zero renovation of an historic 1911 Stables building. Initially built by the Army to house horse-drawn carriages and coal, the structure had remained vacant and dilapidated since the 1960s. By careful preserving the existing structure – including all 58 of the original roof trusses – and building a new, highly efficient thermal envelope, the building is able to operate entirely from renewable energy supplied by an 8kw rooftop solar array. Featuring natural and salvaged materials, including old-growth wood reclaimed from the adjacent Barracks building and salvaged Douglas-fir windows and doors, the modest office is likely the lowest-carbon project in Perkins&Will's entire portfolio. The renovated Stables is phase one of a larger effort to restore the adjoining historic Barracks building and provide a beautiful neighborhood asset for the entire local community.

During early stages of the renovation work, the entire building was lifted up to allow for new wall framing and stabilization.
