McLennan Design collaborated with Seattle Public Schools to craft a comprehensive sustainability vision plan aimed at diminishing environmental impact, emphasizing repair, restoration, and healing within natural and community systems, while ensuring equity throughout, and leveraging extensive public engagement efforts to shape a forward-thinking vision plan spanning the entire district school system.

    Seattle Public Schools seeks not only to build resilient schools that maintain function during a disturbance, but also to prepare students to be resilient for whatever the future brings. It is no longer enough for a school district to be concerned about resource conservation and reducing the environmental footprint of the institution to be “less bad”. The age of incrementalism and mitigation has passed. Seattle Public Schools decided to leap forward into the age of regeneration, where humans begin to better understand and participate in the repair, restoration and healing of living systems and equitable community systems that support them. Students need schools that model and teach the path to regeneration, built in a way that equitably meets the needs of the present generation without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
