If a university can generate 100% of its own water and energy, can cities do the same?

Simon Fraser University Masterplan

Burnaby, British Columbia

McLennan led the design of this master plan for Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. The design features approximately 1 million square feet of mixed-use buildings – all of which was planned using the principles of the Living Building Challenge. The project contains one of Canada’s first Living Buildings – the SFU Daycare. The master plan analyzed how to knit together the existing university campus with a new urban village for several thousand people. Transportation planning included a bus transfer station and a gondola, taking people up and down the mountain. Planning infrastructure included a new public plaza, clock tower, streetscapes and energy and water infrastructure as public amenities.
