In the late 1970’s an eccentric Boeing Engineer designed and built a remote cabin in the San Juan Islands using aircraft construction techniques – and ultimately air-lifted these “pods” into place. The Cabins were used as a three season place of residence continuously for the next forty years, until the owners passed away. It was purchased by McLennan in 2021. The highly unique structure was leaking, had no power and water, no working kitchen or bathroom and was declining fast.
The goal of the project was to stabilize and repair the buildings, redo the interior to be modernized and functional and to put in place new water and energy infrastructure to make off-grid function work. To do this we installed a new kitchen and rewired the entire structure. New interior design throughout and installation of solar and battery systems, new water catchment and other needed repairs.

― DESIGN CONCEPT
This mid-century modern gem deserved new life as a model of sustainability. Elegant interventions inside and out turn a declining asset into a beautiful off-grid seasonal cabin. The goal was to maintain the original character wherever possible, while adding new life and a cleaner, more functional interior.
