How can design help a community become a ‘blue zone?’

RISE Costa Rica

A new residential community, including a wellness resort, mixed use center and permaculture on 800 acres near San Isildro, Costa Rica, aspires to meet the Living Building Community Challenge as a center of innovation and inspiration. Blue zones are places in the world where longevity and happiness nurture each other. The existing land, currently used for grazing, is adjacent to pristine forest reserves. A river divides the property into two halves. New residential properties will lay lightly on the land, and the landscape restored. Many existing roads will become trails for the community electric bike program. Future phases include the design of the mixed use center, Waldorf school, infrastructure and amenities.
